Groningen Metropolitan Region: Frontrunner in Transitions

As the Groningen Alliance, our ambition is to establish and further develop the Groningen metropolitan region as a mainport (main economic hub) in the Netherlands. As the country’s foremost knowledge and innovation ecosystem with regard to the energy, health and digitalisation sectors, Groningen will continue to facilitate the transitions of our time.

In this strategic agenda, we establish the Groningen Alliance’s direction for the next four years. In doing so, the Alliance partners define and commit to their ambitions, targets and objectives. Now that the course has been set, we can determine measurable targets and indicators and formulate operational plans per sector. We do so together as Alliance partners, but also together with other partners such as companies, institutions and local governments. This strategic agenda can be regarded as an open invitation to these parties. Despite working on specific (sectoral) targets and objectives, we never lose sight of the bigger picture. By acting as one, we strengthen the unity of the network of campuses (sites where business, research and education are clustered together) within the Groningen metropolitan region.

3 key targets

  • To realise the best campuses, study programmes and hybrid learning environments in the Groningen metropolitan region, and thus strengthen our knowledge and innovation ecosystem to the benefit of the metropolitan region and the country as a whole.
  • To work alongside our partners towards a future-proof labour market, in which the regional economy benefits optimally from the (international) talent educated in the Groningen metropolitan region.
  • To establish and showcase the metropolitan region of Groningen as a mainport (main economic hub) in the Netherlands, by increasing and
