In the city of Groningen there are a number of annual events especially for children. They are generally planned to co-incide with school holidays.

Here we give an overview of events per season. Although many website only have Dutch information, the activities are often accessible to non-Dutch speakers. We suggest contacting the organisers in each case to see what is possible.

Spring holidays

  • May funfair (kermis) - with nostalgic fair at the Ossenmarkt suitable for young children.

Summer holidays

  • May funfair (kermis) - with nostalgic fair at the Ossenmarkt suitable for young children.
  • Many summer activities are organised through after creches and school care centres (BSOs).
  • For older children, summer time is the time to learn to sail a boat, play tennis, or build a house. Ask at City Central for an overview of summer activities for children.
  • Sailing courses in Haren

  • Timmerdorp - week-long outdoor building camp, for 8 years+.
  • Noorderzon - annual arts festival with a special children’s programme.

Autumn holidays

  • Cinekid - film festival with activities lab, held at the Groninger Forum

Winter holidays

  • Roald Dahl festival - held annually between Christmas and New Year at Gronigner Forum
  • Groningen on Ice - ice skating rink on the Grote Markt and in various locations in the province
