Groningen: student city

Fietsen Poelestraat

Groningen is a real student city. With two universities, there are a lot of students living in the city - and we really mean a lot. The whole city of Groningen has a population of approximately 230,000 people, of which almost 25 percent is students. This makes Groningen not only the city in the Netherlands with the highest student population density, but also the youngest city in the country (and one of the youngest in Europe!).

With so many students living in Groningen, the city is always lively. It has a remarkably big and diverse cultural scene, with a vibrant and world-famous nightlife: did you know that the bars are allowed to be open 24 hours a day?

Plus, there are many associations, activities, festivals and many other fun things to do in Groningen, so there truly is something for everyone. Don’t believe us? Check out this website and see for yourself.
