Food shopping

Groningen offers plenty of options for grocery shopping. Whether you enjoy browsing local markets or prefer the convenience of supermarkets such as Albert Heijn, Jumbo, or Lidl, there is something for everyone. This guide provides an overview of the different shopping options available.

Market days in Groningen

Market days in Groningen are a good opportunity to enjoy the city while shopping for fresh, local produce. The two main markets in the city are Vismarkt and Grote Markt

Vismarkt

The market on the Vismarkt is held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Vismarkt (Fish Market) is one of the largest and most popular markets in Groningen. Despite its name, the market offers much more than just fish. You will find a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, bread, flowers and other local delicacies. The market is a great place to experience the local culture and enjoy the city while finding high-quality, fresh products.

Grote Markt

Located at the heart of the city, the Grote Markt hosts a smaller market on Thursday. Here, you can find fresh products, baked goods and other food items. It has a more intimate vibe compared to the Vismarkt, making it perfect for a quick stop to pick up some essentials.

These markets are not only great for purchasing fresh food but also for exploring local specialities like Dutch cheeses, fresh fish, and seasonal fruits.

Supermarkets

For your everyday grocery needs, Groningen has several well-known supermarkets, each offering a wide range of products at different price points. Below are some of the most popular options.

Albert Heijn (AH, or ‘Appie’)

With multiple locations throughout the city, Albert Heijn is a convenient choice for many residents. Known for its extensive product range, including organic and sustainable options, AH offers high-quality goods, although prices tend to be slightly higher than at some other supermarkets. Don’t forget to get a Bonuskaart (discount card), as it can help you save a significant amount on your groceries.

Jumbo

Jumbo is another popular supermarket, known for its competitive prices and good service. Stores offer a broad selection of products, including fresh produce, meat, and dairy. Jumbo is also known for its “lowest price” guarantee, helping customers get good value for their money. In the Jumbo app you can also get personal discount on products and save for discount.

Lidl

If you are looking for a budget-friendly option, Lidl is an excellent choice. Its stores offer a wide variety of products, including fresh produce, baked goods, organic products, and household items. Prices are generally lower than at Albert Heijn and Jumbo, making Lidl especially popular among students and budget-conscious shoppers.

Smaller stores

Groningen is also home to a variety of smaller supermarkets. While they often have a more limited selection than larger chains, they can be very convenient for everyday shopping. Supermarkets such as Spar and Plus can be found in various neighbourhoods throughout the city.

In addition, Groningen has several international supermarkets that specialise in products from specific regions or countries. You can find an overview of these stores here.

Food shopping in Groningen offers a diverse experience, whether you prefer browsing local markets or visiting one of the city's many supermarkets. With a wide range of options available, it is easy to find products that suit your preferences, needs, and budget.
