A good study spot is worth a lot, especially during examweeks. But, where to go? Groningen has a lot of students but also a great amount of study spots. Some of them are free to go to, at restaurants and cafés you need to order something from time to time. We will list 12 of our favorite study spots down below for you!
1. The University library (UB) @Broerstraat 4
During exam weeks, many students can be found at the university library. These weeks are called RUG-only periods, which means you must be a student at the University of Groningen to study at the UB. Additionally, you need to make a reservation. Fortunately, the University of Groningen offers more study spaces across the city.
2. Hanze mediatheek @ Petrus Driessenstraat 3, @Zernikeplein 7
If you’re a student at Hanze and want to study somewhere quietly, you can go to one of their ‘mediatheken’. It’s a quiet spot, with a library setting. You can go to the one at Zernike or the one close to UMCG.
3. Forum @Nieuwe Markt 1
Another popular study spot, which is also located in the city center, is Forum. This modern and inspiring location is a great spot to study among peers. However, be warned, in busy periods like examweeks, this location is quickly full.
4. De Uurwerker @Uurwerkersplein 1
You have to know where to go but once you know how to find De Uurwerker, you will come back! This cozy place has a separate spot to study or work. You will be less bothered by other guests who come in to have coffee, lunch, dinner or a drink and you can enjoy these things too!
5. Ikea @Sontweg 9
A not so popular study spot (yet!), but a great one is Ikea. For a cup of coffee or a drink, you can stay as long as you want in their restaurant. The ikea is open until late and makes it possible for you to have a nice Swedish lunch or dinner as a reward!
6. Coffee Break @Gedempte Zuiderdiep 22
At the Zuiderdiep is a big cafe called Coffee Break. There is enough space and coffee available for a great study session. This café is also focused on a flexitarian diet. So you can enjoy a conscious snack break.
7. Douwe Egberts @Brugstraat 28 & @Rode Weeshuisstraat 4
Two study locations in Groningen are from Douwe Egberts. It’s a spot where there is a nice combination of people taking a break and others studying or working hard. You can also get a discount on your beverages with their DE student card, ask at your location how this works.
8. The Social Hub @Boterdiep 9
This spot is made for students, to get inspired by one another or work together. It’s a modern but cozy spot where you can also get some food and drinks, but nothing is mandatory!
9. Fernweh @Wouter van Doeverenplein
Close to UMCG you find Fernweh, a spot that welcomes everyone from students to remote workers in their walk-in workspace area. You can even reserve private study spots!
The only thing you have to do is order a drink from time to time to be able to work in this place.
10. Barista Café @Astraat 13 & @Dierenriemstraat 200-D
Another study spot that can be found at two locations in the city. This one gives you a homey feeling while studying and enjoying a nice coffee or sandwich from their menu
